Default 2002 XC70: Does it have fan relay or module on fan motor?

Helping buddy with a mild basket case he bought and running through vida codes including: ECM-6110 and we confirmed fan is not coming on and over heating. Haven't tried with AC on yet.

When I search ECM-6110 I see see old school relays in photos and write ups and it's n to clear if those are on pre P2 cars or what. I know I had to replace the fan module on my 2003 once for the always running fan issue.

Is this code referring to that module or am I simply not finding the relay in questions?

Thx.

To the best of my knowledge, there is a cooling fan relay but it also goes through a module that adjusts the voltage to the fan, thus speeds between 10 and 100 percent.

Check the underhood panel.

Thanks that is helpful. Does make sense the module is a speed control. Will see if I can find a list of relay/fuses and try to find that unit that in so many photos.

I believe that I am wrong about this question. It appears that the PCM controls the fan and varies the electrical signal to regulate fan speed.

Had a good look everywhere in the engine bay and fuse/relay box...nothing, so I sure you are correct. Based on other peoples comments I turned on the AC as it should turn fan on high...nothing.

I see in my list I have an ECM-711A error for control module, internal fault. Faulty signal. Going to have to look at this one in detail. I don't want to throw parts at it but with so little else in the system I'm wondering if this is the fan speed module or the ECM itself.

I doubt that it is the PCM. You most likely have a bad fan motor. The easiest way to check this is to put 12 volts to the fan. If it comes on and runs, then it is good. Otherwise, it isnt.

Thanks Tony. Will try.

I am worried the ECM is bad based on the codes in the report plus the gauges are 100 all dead. I've have some things go out before but not 100% everything.

One question...you guys keep saying PCM but I don't see that on my list of 101 acronyms nor any codes/modules starting with PCM...are you guys meaning ECM?

Can you activate the fan with VIDA? Is fuse 11A/7 good?

If the fuse is good but you can't activate the fan, replace the fan assembly. That includes the fan control module.

It could be the ECM, but not likely. I've replaced many fans but never an ECM for this problem.

Thanks. Hope to dive into this horchim tomorrow.

1. Where I’d fuse 11A/7 inside car or box under hood as I saw none marked for fan.
2. Will try out Vida. I’ve replaced several fans to but all forcmodule stuck on high, not zero.
3. Nobody is commenting on my original codes and the one talking about ECM being ECM being unhappy and gauge cluster 100 dead. That is why I’m jumping to ECM.

I have the same code on a S80 2002. Have you fixed your ECM-711-A? If yes, how?
