Default 2002 XC70 Fuel pressure issue

Hi All,

This is my very first Post on this Forum. Please don't shoot me for asking a question that most likely was answered billion time. I could not find the answer when using the search because I'm green to new(ish) Volvo's and not familiar with the terminology.

So to my problem.
I got this car three weeks ago and was able to drive it for 4 days after getting hard plates on.
Car is suffering from no start issue. It had a P0336 code.
Replaced the crank sensor and still no start.
Tested the old sensor and new sensor, old sensor is bad, new sensor is good.
Called IPD to ask about ECU (assuming ECU is bad) long story short he said to see the cam sensor and if it's swimming in oil. It is dry. I figured that I'll replace it anyway.
Got 2nd new OEM crank sensor , new OEM cam sensor. Still no start.
Hit my head on the wall , in the door frame. then it came to me to see if I have fuel at the rail.
Not a drip of fuel , i can hear the pump in the tank. I had the wife turn the key to prime the pump when i held the shredder valve open. Nothing.
So I figured that it most likely will not change anything but i got new fuel filter cause the old one looked like it was about to rust thru anyway. Now i get a tiny drip.

So I'm trying to find info on line where is the fuel pressure regulator , but I see that is doesn't have one but pressure sensor on the end of the rail. I don't have any sensors on the rail. So I don't know what to do as i wait for the Fuel Pressure test gauge. There is a nother shredder valve of Fuel filter input line. So I'm thinking that i can see on the gauge what is the pressure from tank VS fuel rail.

But you guys might know a common issue with this car.

Any help if appreciated , even links to the info . Thank you.

BTW My wife literally cried. She finally started to drive a nice car and comfortable car. She crashed her rusted out POS of 96 Toyota corolla ( I hated that car with the passion).

2002 should not have a fuel pressure sensor on the end of the fuel rail - The fuel pump runs all the time at full speed. There's no fuel return line so the fuel pressure regulator is part of the pump.

If there is a fuel pressure sensor on the end of the rail, a 31272730,

the pump only runs as needed. That function is controlled with a fuel pump controller, originally mounted on the side of the gas tank near the rr wheel. The controllers were exposed to the elements and I have replaced many that corroded and failed, causing - no fuel pressure. Volvo moved them inside the car in later years. Fuel pump is located under the 2 panels under the back seat.

Things can get very expensive randomly replacing parts in a Volvo (I understand "you had a code", but that code does not necessarily mean that part is bad). If you plan to keep the car and work on it yourself you might want to find (on the internet) the stolen/hacked factory service manual. VIDA 2014d was the latest version and that has info for up to 2015 model year cars. That combined with a Clone DICE unit and you will be able to definitively diagnose most of your problems. (but you still need a fuel pressure gauge also) The last clone Dice unit I purchased was $85. If you don't want to go the VIDA/DICE route you will need a compatible scan tool that can talk to all of the modules, not just a plain OBD scanner.

ECU - most modules are coded to the car - meaning you can't just swap in a used one (usually) and have it work. Xemodex is a company that could be your friend if you do have a module problem (instrument cluster is a common replacement)

Welcome to the board!

Here's a partial fuel system wiring diagram - 2/23 is the fuel pump relay mounted on the CEM under the dash,(most relays are the same, simply swap them if you think one is bad), 6/33 is the pump (for a car with no fuel pressure sensor) And TAKE A PICTURE of your CEM before you start moving or unplugging things - there many empty spaces.

Thank you very much. This is giving me a direction and confirmation that this thing does not have that sensor.

I was looking at sourcing vida dice. I found dice clone on line and someone selling vida as download too. I will be doing that soon anyway.

Thank you again.

after reading this, i am wondering if my fuel pump was bad in the first place, i hope this thread isn't too old for someone to read/reply. i replaced the fuel pump in my 2002 volvo xc70 AT wagon. it would periodically not start, so, i'd bang with a hammer handle on the bottom of the tank, and it would start, leading me to believe it was the pump failing. i ordered a pump off of the internet, new. was a nightmare to install, i broke the left/driverside Fuel Tank Sending Unit plastic bracket, it holds the float arm, while installing, i got another one from a craigslist acquaintance, he showed me how to install w/o breaking it again. now i turn the key to prime pump, which seems to cycle correctly, determined no pressure at the fuel rail. i went to the pump, disconnected the two hoses, turned key, no fuel, even though i hear the pump cycle .. i still have 1/4 tank of gas .. the gas gauge, when i turn the key moves maybe a 1/16" .. could the float be caught in something ? any ideas, plz help, i'm tried of driving / borrow other ppls cars ...
