2004 XC70 - clicking shifter handle, multiple error messages
2004 XC70 with 137K mi. Within the last week, when I start the car and am sitting in Park, I can hear and feel a repeating mechanical click through the shift handle. If I drive 5 miles or so, turn off the car for 10 minutes and start again, the Check Engine light comes on. When I put the car in gear, the engine revs but starts moving slowly, sort of like when the "W" weather mode is activated (or limp-home mode?). The transmission shifts normally after that, but the Transmission Service Needed notice often comes on. Some of dashboard displays also go out. I also got a Brake System Failure message once, but the brakes work fine.
My local indy Volvo specialist looked at it, got the same messages, downloaded the error messages, but couldn't come up with a fix (they don't own all of the possible diagnostic tools.) They disconnected the battery overnight, and the error messages went away. The car worked OK for them for several on/off cycles, but when I took it home, the error messages started again after a couple of trips. The indy shop said that this may be a job for a Volvo dealer.
Has anyone had an issue like this? I'd like to have some idea of what I'm facing when I take it to the dealer. Thanks!
