Default 2008 xc70 completely disconnecting rear differential to go FWD

Hello all,

2008 XC70 with 200k. Just picked it up as a project. I’ve got the dreaded differential howl and whine when accelerating and decelerating. I really don’t care about all wheel drive so I’ve been researching how to disable the rear differential to go front wheel drive only to get rid of this sound for as cheap as possible.

From my limited research it looks like I can have the rear prop shaft removed without any negative errors codes or problems besides losing all wheel drive and having deadweight of the rear differential still there.

Can anybody confirm this?

It looks like just dropping the rear prop shaft alone might still leave me with a decent amount of noise coming from the rear differential still turning with the rear wheels. Originally I was going to have the two half shafts removed but it looks like the ABS sensor sits on a ring on the axle shaft itself so I cannot remove them entirely. Can someone confirm this?

I want to disable it entirely permanently without removing the diff unit itself as I’ll be paying a shop to remove these parts.

thanks all!
