Delay to go into gear

Hello. Occasionally my 2002 Volvo XC 70 pauses to go into gear when I shift into drive. I checked the Trans oil when the engine was warm and running and it appears to be in the correct level.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

That year had tranny issues. Check the condition of the fluid. Might be a good idea to have it serviced.

As said before, check the condition of the fluid. If it is dark and smells burnt then it would be a good idea to flush it. If that does not fix it then the only other sources would be the valve body (which is a costly repair) or replacing the transmission ( comes with a valve body)

Thanks all for the help so far. The fluid seems to look, smell and taste ok LOL!
The smell is a bit of a strong oil smell. Attached are a couple photos as me being an Artist a picture is worth a 1000 words!

Is doing a Transmission flush something I could do and if so any links/video on this procedure would be great!

I searched our forum for similar issues, but there are so many transmission issues to sort through!

Just enjoying a stay home Blizzard day here in PEi!

I think I will proceed with a flush of the transmission as shown here:

Would anyone know the best place to get the Mobile oil, filter and clips that he mentions in the video?

Mine does the same pause before going into gear. Does your car shift well otherwise? I'm in Charlottetown, what a winter!! And it's not over!

hi joepataydis. I live in Stratford next to Charlottetown! Another storm on Wed!!

I have just finished my drain and fill for the 3rd time and the car has no more pause when shifting into drive and the overall shifting is much better. In a few weeks I will be doing a full Transmission flush with the Valvoline Synthetic oil and will post my results!

No go tune up the snow blower!!

Stephen,

Great to know you've seen positive results. I too should do drain and fill a few times. Keep me posted!

Hello joepataydis and all. I am very pleased to say my XC70 has never shifted so smooth! I started by doing a drain and fill 3 times with 300-400kms between each drain and fill. Last week I did the full Gibbons / transmission flush with Valvoline Max Life Synthetic Trans oil purchased at the local Walmart. I did contact Valvoline and they confirmed the oil is for the Volvo XC70's.
I also installed the Magfine inline filter as attached here to give me the extra protection :-)

I will post later on to keep you all informed!

It's always a good idea to have the software reset after replacing the transmission fluid. the transmission software has a setting for 'new fluid' which helps it adapt to the new fluid properties.

Rlopez1 04-07-2014 12:37 AM

oragex, I recently did this trans fluid flush using 13 quarts of Mobile 3309 ATF and 8 oz of SeaFoam trans tune. The trans shifting seems to have improved significantly. Still not as good as it should be. I plan on flushing it again after 2k miles to see if there is any more improvement.
I did not know about the software reset. Is this a dealer only job?

oragex 04-07-2014 03:00 AM

I think it can be done with vida/dice.

Stephen0523 04-07-2014 05:46 AM

Thanks for the tip Oragex. Can I reset the software myself, or is that a dealer issue?

Stephen0523 04-08-2014 05:43 AM

H Oragex, what is Vida/Dice? I read somewhere that simply disconnecting the battery for 30 seconds can reset thing. Could it be that easy?

oragex 04-08-2014 05:53 AM

Vida/dice is a device used to read&change settings in car,s software. There are surely independent garages using it, sometimes also individuals offer cheap service on local advertising sites, worth a look:) the battery reset only works for some engine sensors

Stephen0523 04-08-2014 12:36 PM

Thanks Oragex. I am willing to get a Vida Dice, but after searching I am overwhelmed what to get, will it reset the Transmission software etc. I am on a Mac but I have windows Vista Business installed via Parallels.

Any tips would be most appreciated.

I don't have the vida myself, most people use it on windows xp/7 I think.
