Does the geartronic shifting help with a transmission that jerks
I have 2001 XC70 which has been diagnosed with needing a new transmission. The car has 190,000 miles on it and I do not want to sink the 4,OOO Into the car. I commute 160 miles to work each day. The car still drives, but has a problem with jerking. I found that if I drive it in manual/geartronic......it drives better. Will driving it manually help save the transmission? Or am I setting myself up to get stranded on the side of the interstate?

i just went through all this the dealear thought it needed a trans. I drained and filled 3 times, to get all the fluid changed but I used the wrong fluid valvoline multi vehicle ATF dosent work right!!!
I got the toyota type 4 fluid, this time I took off the top trans cooler line and let the car pump the old out as I put new in. It took 10 quarts to start getting clean fluid through it and back out.
Now the car is shifting like new!!
I would get a case of toyota type 4 ATF drain the 3 quarts in the pan and fill then run 10 miles. do it 3 or 4 times.
OR better yet undo the top cooler line and do the full system drain if you can...
I dont think you will make it any worse but there is a slim slim slim chance it can get worse, but I have never seen it happen..

Get the transmission flushed.
The transmission needs to be properly flushed because there is almost certainly debris built up in the valve bodies. Transmission shops have equipment that can completely evacuate the fluid. Drive the car a while and shift manually until it is at full operating temperature. Change the fluid and filter a second time. This resolves most shifting problems. The transmission is basically indestructible as long as you don't rapidly shift from reverse into drive while the car is still drifting backwards.

I have found the final fix for the shift klunk problem.
I waited to long and ruined my front motor mount from the banging.
I pulled off the valvebody cover and the 2 shift solinoids were dirty with grey dust sludge, not much of it but the shafts were dirty. You can get a solinoid repair kit that gives you instructions and new back covers.
I should have posted this a year ago when I fixed it!
Sorry people it took so long .
It fixed my trans. 100% perfect for over the past 1 and a half years.
I hope this helps someone , don't waste your money and time flushing it, just repair or replace your 2 shift solinoids. It is a all day job but it will fix that rev then klunk after slowing down and pressing the gas again.
Or pay for it to be done k
,it's still way less than a new or used transmission replacement.
