Question figeac

I own a 2005 XC70 wagon with 82,500 miles on it. At my last service I was informed that I've "lost" my rear wheel drive but to replace the part that "gave out" it would run close to $2400 (part and labor). I was told this could safely wait until October until I could save up the money. Meanwhile (unrelated?) I have noticed much better gas mileage (cause/effect of just having a front wheel drive car? or just going from winter gas to summer?).
So--is it safe to continue using my wagon with only front wheel drive--for 3 months, forever? Is this covered by any warranty? (I am original first owner)
Any advice and insights as to how/why this happened and what to do?
Thanks

You can keep driving it like that for as long as you want, it won't hurt anything. Why would this be covered by warranty? You are well outside of the warranty period.
