Default Noisy valvetrain when warm 2004 2.5t

Good day all. I have a 2004 XC with 240k km's ( about 125k miles) i'm getting what i'll call "lifter noise" althought i think these cars have solid lifters. Ut hapoens around 2750-3250 rpm, usually just before a shift, or if i hold the rpm stready with less than normal load. It will also do it in park if I push the revs up to around 3000. It's a rattle, but not a loose heat shield type rattle. If it were happening cold, i'd say oil sump o-rings, but this happens warm. I just chaned the oil to full synthetic ( only recently bought the car so i dont know whst was in there. Any thoughts? Thnx

I have the same on my 2005 S40 T5. Around 2300 RPM it sounds like lifter noise, goes away around 3,000. The car has 115,000 miles, using Mobil 1 10-30. No other issues.......

Default CVVT perhaps

Have just been down this road and it might be your CVVT. This is located under the timing belt cover on the left side. Easy to get off and check, four bolts and one cable to disconnect. Check resistance with multi meter while the CVVT is hot. It should be around 3ohm. Give it a good clean with break cleaner and reassemble. Volvo's replacement is less prone to gunking up with cr*p oil, but you should still use synthetic. The new part (if required) has a different connector on it and requires it spliced onto the existing cable.

Good luck.

You must always use Mobil1 full synthetic oil and a top quality filter. Never, never, never use anything but fully synthetic oil. The heat from the turbocharger will cook anything less. You didn't mention the climate, so it's impossible to recommend which oil weight to use. My daughters car had the same problem and switching from 5W-30 to 10W-30 eliminated the noise. You could try some Motel engine flush. It removes all build up in the engine. But, sometimes the only thing sealing up the engine is the gunk on the oil seals so leaks might develop. Use it only if the problem persists.

Wrong.

Synthetic is not required. I've been running regular oil in my 2.5T for almost 100,000 miles. Not a sign of any sludge anywhere.

Ref oil: I bought the car used, but had been using Mobil 1. Tried 20-50, no help. I was getting metal in the oil. Sold it to carmax for 2k, Volvo, never again. Too many issues.
