Replacing the strut mount...

what year / model? yes the strut needs to come out and you need a spring compressor to remove the top nut to get the mount off.
typically its the spring seat that fails (see the good and the ahem, bad in the pic. The mount aka is the metal piece next to the wrench set. This is from an 850 but most volvos are the same.

cool, if you decide to source your own parts, go with Genuine or OEM (ie Febi) for the spring seat or check out IPD as they sell a "heavy duty". Cheap after market spring seats will likely fail within the next 50K miles. The bushing (ie mount) itself is not prone to failure but your call on replacing or not. You may not be able to tell if they are good until you get the struts out and apart.
