The part I'm considering is a Bosch 0-001-108-402. I have located a very low mileage used original S40 starter. The Volvo part numbers for the two cars do not show a common starter but rebuilt part interchange guides indicate that many starters do interchange.

Second question: looking at Rockauto are there any brands to avoid? Thanks!
