Wrong Key Stuck Ignition Cylinder
 

My brother tried to start our dad’s 2006 XC70 but didn’t realize it was a Chevy key and it’s now stuck. Tried using a pair of pliers to wiggle and pull while I jiggled and steering wheel and shifter to no avail. Suggestions? Our dad doesn’t drive anymore so it’s not urgent but is there a way I can remove the whole
cylinder from the steering column? Called a couple of locksmiths and they said they can’t do anything.

Google for details on cost to replace the ignition lock cylinder. It can be done assuming you have some skills and tools but requires disassembling the steering column a bit. Budget $500 for a dealer or Volvo friendly shop to do the job $250 parts/250 labor - Dealer may be the way to go as there's likely to be programming involved which requires a VIDA tool

If the cylinder is damaged and won't work with the original key - Simply order a new steering column lock. Order it from a Volvo dealer using the VIN number (and probably proof of ownership) and it will come precut for your existing keys. (make sure your key works BEFORE bolting it onto the steering column)

The lock cylinder by itself is not removable. There are no electronics involved so no "programming" using VIDA is required.

Thanks for the replies. Next time I’m up I think I will look at removing the entire lock cylinder. From there it will be easier to deal with. The Chevy key might be more important than the cylinder since it’s for my parent’s conversion van. Although since it requires removing the steering wheel I need to weigh having it towed to a shop instead.

You will find no bolts heads on the two bolts shown below. They are security bolts and the heads break off when installed. I use a right angle drill to remove the heads. Some have had luck using a chisel or punch to loosen the bolts.

The steering wheel does not have to be removed. Simply take the plastic cover off, drill or remove the security bolts with whatever method you choose, and bolt the new steering column lock on. Takes less than an hour if you have done a few before.
