960 blinking arrow
Just bought 1996 960 sedan with 75,000 miles. The arrow on the dash started blinking, check engine light came on, the wse lights blink, occasionally the speedo will not work and the trans will sometimes downshift suddenly. I took the car to an auto parts store where they checked the odb2 code, it came up as a code PO500(speed sensor). does anyone have any idea if this sounds like the speed sensor and if so where is it located and is it possible to change it yourself? </P>
Thanks.</P>

I just had the sensor on the side of the transmission replaced by my mechanic on our 1995 850 sedan. The exact symptom was occuring on this vehicle as you are experiencing: blinking arrow indicating problem with transmission shifting, downshifting to winter mode etc. This also triggers the check engine light. This sensor is located on the side of the transmission and costs approximately $110, then add labor. I have only driven the vehicle for a little over a day after the replacement, but so far so good.</P>

Thank you for the feedback. I also had the sensor replaced and everything was fine for about a week, and then the same thing happened again(Blinking arrow, check engine light and the WSE lights blink). Does anyone know what could be causing the speed sensor malfunction? Please help. I just thought of something else, I'm not sure if it's related but the FM on my radio does not work(just static), AM works fine along with the CD and tape. Is there any connection in the wiring that could connect the two problems, maybe a short in the radio(hopefully not too silly an inquiry)?<edited><editID>hoochbob</editID><editDate>38159.7255439815</editDate></edited>

I thought that I would resurrect this old thread because I've got the same thing going on with a '96 960 wagon. I'll be changing the sensor shortly, for lack of a better idea. (Surely some of them must go bad.) Would anyone who has done this job comment about how they dealt with the lack of room in back of the differential?

The problem you are experiencing could be caused by a bad ABS Control Module.
I have a 1999 S70, and I would get the speed sensor code and lose the speedometer. I fooled around with the wiring harness on the module, and I am pretty sure it just dirty and won't sit properly on it.
I would check and clean the wiring harness on the module which is located on the ABS system. If that doesn't work, you may have to replace the module.

Thanks for the input. I never got an ABS light or lost the speedometer (that I noticed), not that it proves anything one way or the other. I have an uneasy feeling that this project will get ugly.
