ABS light comes on/off - S70 1998
Can anybody give me some input on the following problem:

The ABS light on my 1998 S70 comes on and goes off periodically as I am driving the car. It sometimes stays on for a long time and sometime it turns off after driving the car for a little bit.

It seems like my ABS brakes are working just fine when the light is not on. I am unsure if it works when the light is on. It started for no apparent reason and I cannot get a good understanding of what is going on.

What is the best way to fix and get rid of this problem? What are potential things that I can check myself before taking the car to the shop? Can any shop with a scanner device get the error code reading fromthis or does it have to be a special place with scanning devices for foreign cars?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks.

ABS light comes on/off - S70 1998
I have a 97, 760 turbo and had the same problem. I needed to know if the ABS really worked when the light was ON! So,,,, I found a deserted streatch of road when the light was on (ABS FAILURE) and got up to about 40 MPH and jammed on the brakes!!! Sure enough she locked up all 4 tires! When the light was off ABS worked FINE!

I found out that my trunk (ABS unit is in the trunk on 97 760) was leaking and there was moisture in the ABS well. One of the relays was damp and that caused one of the contacts to not make goodcontact. I cleaned the contacts and it fixed the problem.***NOTE*** I recommend that you replace therelay that you find that is bad. If you are not mechanically and electrically tallented, I would take it to the dealer.

TRY THIS! Whenthe light is ON, take the handle of a medium size screw driver and tap on the relays one at a time (have someone in the car watch the light) if the light goes out when you tap on the relay, that relay could be the bad one. Thats how I found mine!

RE: ABS light comes on/off - S70 1998
If the warning light comes on intermittently, it may be a bad ABS control module. This is a real bummer because it is pretty expensive to replace. ($400 for part and about an hour of labor) Unfortunately, this is a pretty common problem with these cars. Good Luck!

RE: ABS light comes on/off - S70 1998
You can find someone who can rebuild the ABS module pretty inexpensively. I had this same issue (ABS light comes on along with Tracs off light) and found someone in Idaho (thank you Ebay, this guy had only positive feedback, and a lot of it) who specialized in rebuilding these for european cars. The whole process took about a week, and it cost me a little over $100. The other reason to do this instead of purchasing a new one, is that new one will die at about the same rate, since it's the same design. Keep in mind that taking ABS module off and installing it back on takes some time and torx socket (they are available online only, so you might need to do a little research)

ABS light on 1998 s70
My ABS light is on majority of the time. Have experienced some grinding feeling in the brake pedal. The pedal will go down a couple inches then lock up preventing me from applying necessary pressure to the brakes to come to a stop and when the pedal moves again it feel like it's grinding on metal. Help!
