Stereo Installation Trouble (740GL)

Stereo Installation Trouble (740GL)
I just purchased a 1989 740GL, and unfortunately it has no stereo in it. My roomate owns a 1990 740GL, and when we went to get our CD player installed they said the entire car would have to be completely re-wired because it is common ground. Basically they wanted $400 to install a $200 stereo. The guy at best buy told me this is always the case with volvos. Is this true? And if so is there another way around it besides re-wiring the car? I know electricity and it doesnt make sense to me. It sounds like they are trying to rip me off. How can I check to see if this is a problem in my 89 740GL? Neither of these are waggons, and they are both Sedans. Thanks.

sounds like they are being lazy. I had an 86 740gle and i put in a Kenwood radio in it. The installer told me that the wiring was different and that he had to simply test the system to see what wire went where, cause there is no wiring harness that is made for it. It cost me 45 bucks to install it. Check elsewhere or try to find a wiring diagram of your radio somehow.

hope it helps.

Stereo Installation Trouble (740GL)
I installed a cd player in my 89 740gl.

I went to the stereo shop and purchased a standard 240 wiring harness. I attached the harness to the wiring on the back of the radio and then I went out to the car. I took out the original radio and attached the power harness to the oem plug in the dash. Next I located the amp under the steering column and unplugged it and plugged in the harness from my new radio.

Everything works perfectly and I have great sound. The amp now just sits there unused.

Good Luck,
