Default Aftermarket audio

I have a 2017 Xc60 and looking to improve the audio. The sound isn't that great compared to my Escalade or my wife's Infiniti (all factory). It's been a while (25 years-ish) since I've toyed with aftermarket speakers/sound systems, and this is my first Volvo. That being said, I stopped by a local installer and talked about my options. He basically said that swapping out factory speakers for "better" speakers would provide no benefits and may in fact decrease quality (the factory speakers and amp are synced accordingly and new speakers wouldn't be). His solution - a digital processor, new amp, new door speakers, and a sub.

That seemed like overkill to me, to simply improve on the sound. Was he trying to sell me an entire system (that I probably don't need), or is he correct, swapping factory speakers for new speakers provides no benefits? Can I swap out speakers and actually see an improvement?

Any thoughts or insights would be appreciated.

You never thanked people for the very helpful responses. I find that very rude!
