how to remove the radio in 1990 240?
Hi all,
I want to replace the stock AM/FM radio that's still in my 1990 240. Standard unit, with 4 speakers (one in each door). Now, I started the other day; removed everything that seemed to hold it in place, trims, bolts, etc. Yet, for some reason, it seems to be "stuck" there, as if something was holding it in place from the back. It moves "freely", but won't come out when I pull on it. And I'm affraid that if I pull too hard on it, I wiil break something.
Anyone ever experienced with this? I tried everything I could, didn't see anything that could prevent it from coming out...
After 20 minutes of this, I decided to put everything back in place and ask for help here.
Oh, and if someone has the speaker wires color code... that would be a great help.
Thanks in advance,
Paul

You were on the right track. Take it all back apart again. Sometimes you really have to pull it hard. There is a rubber plug thing on the back of the radio that goes into a hole in the back. Sometimes it gets stuck in there over time.
I can tell you from last night's experience that Tech is right, I pulled the radio REAL hard in my 91 240 wagon and it popped right out- seems like the rubber plug gets brittle over time and won't release easily or something. Just be sure to pull from the radio and not the plastic surround, I snapped it right off. Fortunately, I got a faceplate kit.

Hi all,
I tried again last evening. This time, I removed the instrument cluster, to get a bit more free space and to be able to shine some light in there... And what did I find? The case of the radio is actually bolted to a rod that itself is bolted to the firewall. No wonder I couldn't get if off! Problem still remains, though: how to remove the damn bolt? And of course, the bolt is located on the least accessible side (passenger side) of the radio... Anyone has a tip? Ever tried that?
Thx,
P.

I haven't ever seen one like that. Someone with SMALL hands must have been scared of the radio being stolen.
Is there anyway you can cut the bracket?
Try to find a long wrench.
I don't think you can get to it if you remove the glovebox.

Hi,
It seems that there is a hole in the center of the dash board, just like one made to hold a single speaker of some sort. Anyways, I removed theplate covering this hole. Yes, there seems to be enough space to get to this metal rod. But how to remove it? That's another story...
Still, the question remains: anyone ever had to fiddle with this before?
Also: did all 1990 240s come with 4 speakers?
Thanks in advance,
Paul

well, seeing as my 79 had 4 stock speakers. im taking a wild stab and saying yes, the 1990's also have 4 speakers. and you the speaker wire thing, just look at the color wires that are at the speakers. they should be different, but then again, they may not.
My '90 looked like it had 4 speakers stock.
My '88 appears to only have had 2 in the front, the 2 in the rear look aftermarket, they're above the seat behind the rear passenger doors and sound significantly better since they arent muffled by seats or legs, there are no holes in the doors where speakers would go
Curious how big the hole in your dash is and about what size speaker you think it will take?

My 240 has four stock speakers (one in each door) also.
Now this is where the fun starts! On top of the dash, above where the back of the unit would be is a speaker or dummy cover which flips off. This gives you access to the rear of the unit. When you take it off, you'll understand why the unit doesn't slide out! Volvo seem to have thought that the unit is sooo good that it needed a metal strut fixed on to the unit at one end and on to the chassis at the other. To undo the strut (it's got a v-shaped end with a bolt through holding it to the chassis) you will need to remove your glovebox (6-8 screws) and then find a spanner that's small enough for you to manoeuvre in that small space. Once you've freed the strut, you can then tug, hit and shout at it unti you manage to bend it sufficiently for the unit to come out (that's what I did and I cut up my hands in the process!). Or, you can try to undo the screws that hold the strut onto the rear side corner of the unit.
I've given up trying to find a right hand drive fascia adaptor and the problem of interference on the radio has stangely disapeared by reducing the brightness of the instrument panel lights using the rotary ****. It has to be said that the quality of the original radio unit is very high in terms of good all round sound whether on AM or FM. Just a bit restricted to playing cassettes which I can't be bothered with. I'll just have to make do with the radio. May try a cassette/iPod adaptor. Does anyone have any experience with those units? Do they really work or are there shortcomings?
They work great for about a month and then fizzle out.
What happened? The shop end up not having the right part?...seriously...post a picture...I may be able to help out here
I found a local retail outlet who've sourced the relevant part so my new stereo is being fitted in a few days
Hi CBevis,
here are 3 pics of my dash which I hope are informative and perhaps assist in your success in finding a solution to my problem

sorry...been awhile since i was on line.
Pretty much a mirror image of the one i have (which I'm sure you knew already). A guy could make a fiberglass version of that pretty easily.
