Default Issues on start-up

I recently purchased a preowned 2002 XC V70, 2.4L 5 cyl turbo. It ran great the first week I had it, but the last 2 days it's not starting up right away when I turn the key. It takes two or three tries to get the engine to turn over. It seems to be worse if the engine has been off for a period of time...if it's running and I stop it for a minute and start it again, it starts right up.
My husband suggested that it might be the fact that I filled it with 87 octane gasoline, as recommended in the owners manual. He explained that at high altitude (we're at 5000 ft.) you don't need as high of an octane rating. So this time when I filled it up I used 85 and it's still having the same issue.
What do you think? Spark plugs? O2 sensor? Alternator? Bad gasoline? I don't think it's the battery, I get plenty of power when I just turn the accessories on w/o the engine running.
