When I start or reply to a thread I am automatically "signed up" as "subscribed" to the thread.

Each night I get an email with a link to each thread I am subscribed to.....I realize I can click on the link at the bottom of the email to unsubscribe but how do I post a thread or reply to a thread and not subscribe to begin with??
