Transmission issues S40 2000 automatic
My 2000 S40 134k won’t shift into second gear. This is very intermittent, could go 3 months without doing it or it could happen twice in one week. Usually pulling over putting the car in park and turning the car off and on will clear it. Sometimes just driving in first for while keeping the revs down it will shift, then act normal. The other problem is , it will downshift into 3rd from 4 gear while cruising .This has happened 2 or 3 times in the last 5 years.

How clean is the ATF. Should be a clean red color.
If it is dark brown or black with a burnt smell a flush out and fresh fluid might make a huge difference.
Shift solenoids might also be an issue?
