when you say you've replaced the rings, can we assume you've completely removed the head from the block and are in the process of reassembling? You didn't note the year/engine code but assuming its a standard T5, you'll find the crank timing mark on the pulley and a mark on the block. With the head off you should have set the #1 to TDC manually then checked for the timing mark to make sure you're not 180 off. The cams are marked on the back end and the VVT gears need to be rotated to match the spec.

See if this link helps. Setting the crank/cam/VVT timing on your rebuild would be the same as when replacing the timing belt so you should be able to find stuff on the net or vids on Youtube.

I have discovered how to set the Pistons through the guide whole by the camshaft. My Volvo has 2 standard camshafts so no vvt. There doesn't seem to be any marking on the cams does anyone know if there are. As far as I know I could be out but not sure how to set them. I know there is a guide in the back but due to removing them they could be 180 out
