1987 Volvo 780 Bertone
I have a 1987 volvo 780 Bertone, and I am looking to sell it. There really isn't a market for them and I am wondering if it would be considered a collectors car? How much do you think I should ask for it? It has 250 000 k on it, however the nearest volvo dealership has told me it is in excellent condition mechanically (The engine has been rebuilt). It runs great. The body is in excellent condition as well. I had a spoiler put on and it has after market low-profile rims as well as a stereo system. But I have no idea what to ask for it! I've had some people say 10,000$ and some say 2,000$! Does anyone have any ideas?
Seeing the picture of the car, I could see you asking $2,500 to $3,000 at most because of how many miles, but since the economy is the way it is or at least it is in TN i would say start at $2,000 and go down if you have too.
They came with B230FT or the PRV motor. 24 years later, the turbo motor is much preferred. The uniqueness of the 780 is both a blessing and a curse. The car brings out strong opinions in lots of people. Finding interior trim as well as sheet metal is a genuine chore and will only get worse. At this late date, to continue using it as a daily driver would probably not be wise. 250k is not high miles per year...but it's still a quarter million miles. Typically, Volvos w/ much more than 80k really don't sell for a premium unless it's a frame off resto. If someone paid 3k for the car it would be someone looking specifically for that model and that year. 1800-2500 on the high end.
The car only has about 156,000 miles (250,000 km). I agree with you about the car being a pain to find parts for. The 960's are enough pain being Volvo's flagship for a few years. The rarety of it is nice but if it's less than 90% like new it's just a car that will get harder to fix as days go by. And if it's not turbo it's not worth much.
I am trying to sell it because I am a student and I really need something with a smaller engine that is cheaper on gas. No it's not a turbo. The body is in great condition inside and out, just a small tear in the driver's seat- the engine was rebuilt 3 years ago so it runs like new.
1987 Bertone's were 6 cylinder only. The turbo came in 1989. The turbo is the one you want, better engine, wheels, and suspension. I sold mine because it was expensive to repair (sunroof/power seats,headlights/etc.). Its was a great car, but not as a daily driver.
