2005 XC90 Catalytic converter replacement
New to this forum but have a problem with my XC90-- ran great for 130,000 miles... now replaced several O2 sensor but mechanic said need new catalytic converter... but do not want the Volvo 1800+500 install fee on this great car.... saw several replacement converters and was wondering if those are OK to use for several hundred dollars less...will those cheaper replacements effect my engine or what.... what is the best way to handle this concerning problem on my XC90--- a mechanic said a cheaper replacement could effect engine performance and cause more problems... what should I do --thanks

what happened after you replaced the O2 sensors - still getting codes? Did the mechanic check for other issues like vacuum leaks or a dirty MAF or intake? Is the cat clogged or just showing a check engine light (CEL) code?
Which engine option do you have?
Regarding using an after market cat hurting the engine - not sure how that can happen but it is possible you'd get a recurring CEL light from the rear sensor ( a CEL Boss is common used on turbo cars with high flow after market cats to address this problem).

Thanks for replying.. yes replaced two sensors but light still went on and then checked the code and said it was the catalytic converter.... so that was his prognosis..... have been running XC for another 200 miles and light is of course on.... so that is my concern... what to do next here.......thanks

Oh... the mechanic also replaced all the spark plugs and 3 coils which he said were bad.... so did that and the only other thing after resetting the engine light several times left was that catalytic converter.... and yes checked around and for what it is worth several foreign car sales at the aftermarket concerns said that their converters were warranted for life and others for 5 years... go figure....after all it has 130,000 good miles but I like it for all the trips and trailering I do around New York and New Jersey with the family....It is always hard to say enough is enough to a car you really like... thanks
