2007 S60 2.5T sudden engine problems
I purchased my 2007 S60 2.5T new and it has only 60,000 miles. Do scheduled maintenance and oil change every 5,000 miles. Great car with no problems until last week. First, I heard an intermittent rattling noise on the front right side and then the engine light came on. I checked under the hood and there seemed to be a humming sound. I immediately took the car to my mechanic. By the way, the 60,000 mile service had just been performed last month. At first, the mechanic couldn't determine what the problem was. Now, he has come back to me saying the engine seems to be starving for oil (maybe a faulty oil pump), and there is some issue with the camshaft; both issues causing the noises. This comes just after service was just performed. I am concerned about the mechanic's ability to diagnosis the problem, and what has caused these problems. The mechanic told me that I need to change the oil more often, but they have scheduled the services. What should I do?:

5000 miles is a very reasonable service interval. The mechanic telling you it needs to be changed more often would be suspicious to me. Of course there are still some old schoolers who think 3000 is the right interval, but if this guy has been scheduling the 5K for a long time and is now telling you otherwise it would affect my trust in him. Check your owners manual, but I'm pretty sure that Volvo recommends 7,500, though personally I think that is too long.
Based on the noise I would not be driving the car anywhere to prevent any more damage, but I would be looking for another opinion, so I would recommend getting it towed. If you carry AAA or any other kind of roadside assistance check with them. Otherwise a hundred or two may be a lot cheaper than further damage. Is your current mechanic a Volvo specialist? Based on what you said so far I doubt it, so try to find a place that specializes in Volvo. While they are not on very corner there always seems to be at least one in every decent sized city. Good luck!
