Default Aftermarket vs OEM parts???

Completely new to Volvos and definitely learning as I go, so take it easy on me.

Getting all the parts together to complete Stage 0 since my S70 didn't have any maintenance records and also for peace of mind. I've been reading on different forums and it seems a lot of guys swear by OEM parts. OEM parts are great and are obviously of superior quality, but is the difference really that big between OEM and a reputable known brand such as Contitech, Gates, NGK, Bosch? Plus OEM parts are also in some case 2-3 times what another aftermarket part would cost.

I've used the brands listed above before on other cars with no issues, are there specific parts that I should only buy OEM? Doing the timing belt in a few weeks and was going to use a Gates timing belt. I appreciate any help

we have factory Volvo tbelt kits for $135 - not sure if you would save all that much on a aftermarket.

there's actually three tiers - aftermarket (indeterminate fit, quality), OEM (vendors who supply manufacturers - biggest challenge here is part number matching) and Genuine Volvo. GV is guaranteed fit, guaranteed quality plus dealer vendors stock the odd parts non-dealer parts stores don't and can match on VIN etc to ensure correct fit. In general, if you know who the OEM supplier is you should be good for most parts, but I also trust name brands - ie Gates or Conti for hoses, belts etc.

Hi,
it is not easy to choose which spare part channel to use. Check out this explanation which narrows down the details about OEM vs aftermarket parts.

Needing a compressor. Refurbished is about $250 while aftermarket is $85. Anyone know the difference? Recommend one or the other? Or a good price on a new one
