Any S-80 alignment secrets for the mechanic
I've owned an '08 S80 since new, it's at 180K, and just recently had 2 items give me issue:
1. The cinch bolt on the front shock loosened and caused loss of hardware from brakes and wheel studs, breaking a wheel when 1 stud was left.
2. The tire alignment which has not been of concern now has worn all tire treads on the inside to cords where there is still tread remaining on the center (something to do with the -2 degree camber).
So the cinch bolt loss will remain a mystery, it was replaced and tightened, and repairs were made to the brake hardware/spindle bolt/wheel bearings and all is good-less the speed senser and air bag fault indicators. New wheels are purchased and are similar in diameter size but may track different as offset is less(2mm, at 48mm) and the width is 8" (0.5" more than factory).
Earlier on, a front lower a-arm was bent (pothole) and both were replaced with the newer factory Version 2 series at the dealership.
The problem lies as I see in inproper tread wear and understand from the alignment mechanic, the car has a -2 degree camber, which is unadjustable, and only a toe adjustment, which causes incorrect wear on the tires. He's a sharp guy who's done plenty on autos, though not 100% on Volvo, and he's honest.
Is he wrong in his accessment, there is no adjustment? If he is wrong, what is needed to be done? If there is an mechanical adjustment trick for the rear a-arm, what is it please?
Tires will be in next week, so if you can help to point me/us in the right direction. I/we will appreciate the insight.
Thanks for the help.
Jim
