Default Buying a 2004 V70, FWD, 2.5T

Hi Everyone,

I am a newbie here, so I hope I have found the right forum for this post.

My wife has lusted after a Volvo wagon for years. Since my 92 Maxima is about to shoot craps, I started looking for a newer used car. The Volvo dealer in town has a 2004 V70 for sale. We currently are test driving it for a few days. It is FWD and has the 2.5T motor. It has 63,000 miles on it. The dealer sold it new and has taken it in as a trade-in. I have a carfax report and the dealer is getting service records for me. I am no export, but it looks great, runs well and seems to have been well maintained.

I am new to Volvos, however my wife has already put me on notice that if this car is not in our garage, I will be. So, I have no option but to buy this and want to get the best deal I can, hence my post.

The asking price is $14,950. I know this less than the retail value that Kelly lists for it by about $500. However, as everyone knows these are bad times for auto dealers. The dealer has had this car for almost three months. While I don't know what it was originally listed for when first taken in trade, I have to believe he should be willing to deal. I am thinking of offering $12,500 plus the Maxima. What are your thoughts?

Also, I am one that tries to minimize risk. While I know that extended warranties are viewed by many as a ripoff, I like to have some insurance against a big repair bill. Can you suggest any warranty companies and tell me what I need to make sure is covered? Wherever I get the warranty I would like to have repairs done at the dealer. The dealer has a good reputation in this town.

If there are other issues you think I should be considering, or if you need more information, please let me know.

Thank you in advance. I really appreciate this.

I'm about to purchase my first volvo as well. Let me quickly comment about the warranty. It's pretty widely known that these are scams. In consumer reports, ~75% of people didn't profit from an extended warranty. If you are to purchase one, make sure you know what it covers i.e. rental car bills, electrical, powertrain, seals and gaskets... See what it says about "wear and tear". It's always a gamble, but more often than not you will not benefit from it. Read up on your model's reliability, and base your decision on that.

I drive a 2004 V70R Turbo. My car had 6,000 miles from original owner. I paid $22,000. The car is a dream...I get nervous about repairs because the nearest Volvo dealer is 3 hours away. I am counting the months till we move...BUT I LOVE my car...

Where did you get the $15500 as the retail price for 2004 V70 2.5T? I did quick estimate using Edmunds and it comes up as $13,690 certified or $11,636 dealer retail (no special options included, just mileage and silver color). Here in my neck of woods 2004 from lease with similar mileage sell for about $11-13K.

Well, my wife just got her 06 V70 turbo (not R) with only 13800 miles on it
from a dealer with Volvo Certified warranty good for 6 years/100,000 miles from original June 06 inservice date for $22000. Not the greatest price, but the long warranty is worth something. Leather, moonroof, annoying back up alarm, 17" wheels, heated seats, etc. She's happy. We have the original sticker which was just short of $40K. Ouch on resale for the original owner which probably was Ford's leasing company.

She likes the car (prior ride was Honda Pilot) but I've not driven it enough to provide a meaningful opinion.
