Catalytic Converter not available anymore
Hi,
My 2002 Volvo S60 (2.4L) needs to pass a smog test. It will fail the test now because Im getting the 420 code on the engine light so I took it to a muffler service. They said they couldn't replace it because the cat is hidden behind the manifold or something so I have to take it to a mechanic to take the engine apart and then take that cat out to fix it.
Then I spoke to the Volvo dealership in Van Nuys and he said the labor cost would be $1200, but the part is no longer available (?!?!?!?!).
So not I cannot even get my cat fixed and never pass a smog test on a 2002 model and never drive it again?
Has anyone experienced something like this? And smart and easy solutions? Do I need to scrap this car and pony up for a new one? (I have been unemployed for a year now, so there is no option for a new car atm)
Appreciate any tips and advice!
Thanks

Thanks, I just looked it up.
It says it's not legal to buy or use in California!?!?!

How am I supposed to fix this if its not even legal to use?
I would love to just be able to buy something and fix it so I can drive again!

Correct, many aftermarket converters are not certified for use in California.(and some other states now) Most aftermarket converters use less precious metals in them (platinum, rhodium, palladium) - that's why they don't cost ~$1500 like some of the factory (certified for CA) converters do. And they don't tend to last very long either -
