Expert Help Needed!!!!! Timing Issue XC90

Hi everyone I need some help with the timing on my XC90. I made an attempt at changing the timing belt and cam seals myself, but ran into an issue. To do this job one needs to acquire a 700 dollar cam holding tool. I thought id save myself the 700 bucks and attempt to do it without it, and ended up screwing the timing up.
My question is this: How does the VVT work - does it advance AND retard the timing or just one of the 2. Basically, I got the cams and the crank/pistons in the right position, but I am not sure on how to set up the cam gears. Any insight is greatly appreciated.
I know the gear marks have to line up 1 tooth before the upper cover marks, but im not sure how the unit should be setup. I hope you understand what I am trying to ask
Thank you very much for reading I hope this forum can help me solve this issue.

the car starts and runs perfect. its just the 2 codes that come up, 0017 and 0340. Do you know out of the 2 cams which one is sensor A and which is Sensor B. Also there is no way of finding out how my specific ones work
? I have the 2.5L turbocharged AWD 2003 XC90. Thanks.

Dual VVT Yessir. Tried all kinds of combinations with the gears starting to lose hope... I really hope someone will be able to tell me whats the deal with this.
Also on a side note on the cam gears there are two marks - one on the outside, the one Ive been using and ones much clearer on the inside of the gears (facing the cams). Hopefully im using the right ones.
and it looks like you are the only person on this board that knows what im talking about.

Thanks a lot for the screenshots. I had these instructions from MOD5, but there is one issue which is still stopping me from doing it right.
If you follow these intstructions you will see that they dont really make sense, or I am interpreting them wrong.
I did everything like it said, but when I get to the part where I have to line up the marks with the pulley after tightening the center screw to 120, i run into an issue. the way the instructions tell you to do it, you cannot turn the pulley CLOCKWISE after tightening the center screw. it only goes back 2 teeth on the unit, and back 1 or 2 teeth on the pulley.
something is screwy.
maybe when I line up the exhaust gear 1 tooth before the unit should be to the limit COUNTERCLOCKWISE as opposed to CLOCKWISE?
Is there any chance you can explain the instructions in your own words because unless I am missing something they just dont make sense

It is hard to get it from reading it and also kind of hard to explain almost have to be there and show you how to do it.
On the exhaust if you set it to 2 teeth before the mark instead if after does it work out right?
I also never loosen the outer screws holding the gear to the unit.
Basically in a way when the mark is line up you should have 1 to 2 teeth each way so the VVT is basically centered on the cam.
