Default Horrific engine noise on start up V90

I have a 2017 V90 D5 and intermittently it makes a horrific squealing sound. I might be able to start the engine several times before it disappears but it is loud.

I have uploaded a video of the sound

Any ideas what it might be?

While the engine is on, pull out the engine's oil dip stick. If the sound disappears or dramatically reduces, it could indicate that there's too much pressure being built up in the engine. If the sound disappears, suggest checking and/or replacing the PCV value (a simple/low cost part to replace). There could be other sources for the sound/problem, but I suggest starting here first. Easy to do.

Thanks for that I read up about the PCV and the dipstick, I’ll try this next time. On the last occasion it happened I removed the oil filler cap and thought I’d hear a sucking in of air and change of sound but didn’t really make any noticeable difference.

Thanks for your reply

...just been out to the car to see where the dipstick is but there isn’t one! Instead there’s an electronic reading on the dash screen!

you can also loosen the oil fill cap to vent the crankcase. what happens when you rev the engine slightly? with the hood open you may want to remove the covers then see if the sound comes from a particular location say by the nose of the engine - I'd be leaning towards some pulley noise or an accessory - did you check the power steering reservoir? Does it change sound if you pump the brakes (vacuum assist etc)? try using a small 2 ft section of hose (ie cut garden hose)as a listening tube to see if that helps locate the source

Hi, David. Have you been able to determine the cause yet? Regards, Maggs

Hi, did you ever figure out where the sound was coming from. I have the same car and unfortunately the same sound.

MRKOFF, suggest checking the comments on this thread. If still nothing is found, possibly the sound could be coming from the water pump. Not surprised that OP never came back with his finding for the problem. Not much participation in this forum, just a lot of people who look on.

Thanks for replying. Volvo just came to bring my car to the shop. They say it might be the starter motor... I'll update when I get the car back.

In my case it was the starter motor. Got it replaced and have not had any problems since.

It was the same or at least very similar.

Don't remember how much but it was less than I expected. Maybe USD300...

one last question, at that time were you able to start and drive your car?
My car starts and i can also drive it. At standing position you can hear this strange sound from some where around the motor.

Yeah the car ran fine but the noise is not something you want to drive around with.
