I'm in the market for a new vehicle and I have a budget of no more than 5k. I sold my '95 850 wagon in the spring. I had good luck with it, but at the same time my mechanic told me that it was the worst model that Volvo produced.... that's why I'm here. Tech I hope your listening, I really appreciate your advice.

I did some searching and I saw favorable reviews on the 1998 V70, anything newer (XC70) didn't fare so well. Apparently the transmissions have issues on the AWD models.

I need dependable transportation since I'll be doing a lot of driving. Can you guys give me some advice on models that will fall within my budget?

I think your Mechanic didn't have his stories straight. (Not bashing him)

The 850's were one of the best IMO.

I would look for a 1997 850 or a 1998 S/V70.

 

So should I stay away from the AWD models? I live in upstate NY where it's nice to have, but if it's going to give me problems then I'll just stay away from it.

 

I would stay away from AWD.
Most AWD cars need a new driveshaft every couple of years. They are like $1200.00 just for the part unless they went up more in price.

 

FWD will do just fine.

 

"my mechanic told me that it was the worst model that Volvo produced" i wouldnt let that mechanic touch my volvo 855R.I dont think volvo would still build their 5cyl engine if it was a bad engine, they have had it since 1992! and the 850 chassi is also a very good and stabil chassi so i dont getwhats the problem. Please ask him what he got to say about the Volvo 850 i belive we are many on this foirum that wants to know

the AWD on 850 is a fragile system that needs much care so get aFWD instead.
