Default SIPS - protection for backseat passengers - children?

Hello,

Does Volvo's SIPS protect backseat passengers as well ... especially children?
My priority in buying our very next car is protecting my kids (9yr and 2.5yr) in the back seat. (Against a side impact)
Most safety ratings seem to relate only to a young child in a safety seat strapped in to the front passenger seat.

I'm looking at maybe buying a 2002 S40.

Thanks in Advance

Not sure, but Volvos are pretty safe cars.

SIPS is side impact protection via a strengthened body shell in certain areas. Any occupant is offered greater protection in a side impact than a non SIPS vehicle.
