Default type of oil to use on a used 850 turbo

I just bought a 95 850 turbo wagon with 101k mi. I wonder what types of oil I should use when I do the oil change....I mean should I put regular oil or synthetic oil. By reading at the service record I know the last owner did take the car to the dealer for oil change and looks like the dealer use 10w30 but it didn't say what type.

what is your suggestion?

what about the tranny ( auto) ? Is it safe and ok to use something like Redline ATF ( synethic ) on a tranny has 100k + mi?

I use Redline product before and I like them very much, I just not too true should I put them into my 850.

It should be fine putting the synthetic oil in.

I guess favorite motor oils are like opinions, everyone has one. I use 10W30 Valvoline organic in everything. I change my oil every 5K miles. The manula says 7500K but i can just keep up with 5K better. I easily get 250 to 300 thousand miles and then someone always wants to buy my cars. I do always use Volvo's filters though. Synthetic works just fine if you don't mind spending the money but I see people buy synthetic and change it every 3K miles which is a total waste. With 6 quarts of oil and a quality filter you are just wasteing your money and hurting the environment if you change it so often. My 2 cents worth

Buck....I understand and totally agree your point, the reason for my post is: is it a smart move for me to put synethic oil in a motor which has only been used regular oil in its past 10 yrs.

I agree with TECH. I have used synthetic since its first iterations of the product with much success. Incidently, I use synthetic in a 1965 Austin Healey............forget the stories that synthetic in an old auto will allow leaks. TECH, isn't the new GM transmission fluid a synthetic product? I somehow have the feeling that my Volvo dealer, who is also a GM dealer, uses the GM fluid in Volvos.

It's all about personal preference, mine is high quality fully synthetic every time, standard Volvo oil filter.

10W/30 seems like a very narrow viscosity/ambient temperature band by the way, worth checking whether this is adequate for extreme winter lows/summer highs.

The drive for "corporate fuel economy" drove all the manufactures to use lower viscosity oil in the effort to reduce friction on the crank and etc.. I agree with you............. Interestingly, 10w40 synthetic is becoming more difficult to obtain.....you can still get the 15w50 however here in the states.

Spot on Reg - that's 2 times in a row that we've agreed, what's going on here?! Drive for fuel ecomomy has lead to thinner oils. Drive for reduced servicing costs/less "down time" per vehicle has lead to widespread use of long life fully synthetic oils in company & now standard "family" type cars. Synthetics also help reduce harmful emissions which is another reason European manufacturers are using nothing less than a blend nowadays & more often than not a fully synth.

Here in UK a 15W/40 would normally be a diesel engine oil or a cheap petrol engine oil intended for use in older/higher mileage NA motors. Fully synths here are normally OW/ or 5W/ winter rating & either 30, 40 or in certain supercar applications 50 summer rating. My well-intended concern with Bus Stop using a 10W/30 is the ambient temperature range it covers.

Here is a link to an informative website re engine oil & how it is graded: https://www.burtonpower.com/technical/tt_lube.html

If he wishes, Bus Stop can use it to ensure (bearing in mind that wherever one is in the world the possible extremes of local temperature seem to be getting lower each winter & higher each summer) that the oil will flow properly and protect fully in all possible extremes of temperature found in the localities that his vehicle will be used in. Let's face it, it's only got to let you down once!

Hope this is helpful.

Black Beauty............the Prince is arriving in the city tomorrow. My parents met with your Queen some number of years ago. You know they were English. My sister was the U.S. Consulate General posted to London. I purchased my Healy in 1965 in London...still have it. If I'm not using Shell, I'm using BP...........just can't keep away from the English. See............we do agree.

You're probably more English than I am Reg - genetically I'm 25% Scots!

Any chance you guys could keep Camilla over there for us please? Diana was so popular here that poor Camilla will forever live in her shadow, so up to a point she does get some sympathy from me for that, but not much else. No doubt Charles's PR machine will be working overtime to win your support for Camilla.

Anyway, off topic so I'll end it there!
