My well-maintained T5 has 277,700 km on the car and 177,000 km on the trans (replaced under warranty). Since purchasing the car at 145,000km I have adhered to the maintenance schedule impeccably. I placed my trust in the shop with Volvo specialists.
Just last week my transmission failed to engage into D or R. I could shift, but when I hit the gas, no go, just idled along. I arranged for a tow and foolishly did not check the trans fluid for myself (no puddles, smells or leaks noticed). Shop said they could not repeat the problem. Huh! I went to pick up the car. I checked the trans fluid: pristine and full. Got home and checked all the service invoices. Sadly, not one showed any ATF fluid replacement - a service which is part of the schedule every 50,000km. I pointed this out to the shop, said I found that quite disturbing since everything is itemized. They had no answers for me other than "maybe we forgot to write it down."
I asked them point blank if they just added the fluid, they said no. I was in a panic and started shopping for a new car, thought I was going to be selling the car/trading it in.... but now it drives fine. Could it be that random - total loss of operation? Or did the shop never flush it and it simply stopped working - then they quickly filled it to cover their butt? Very mysterious. I do not trust that shop anymore.
