Default V70 automatic transmission

We have a 1999 Volvo V70, FWD, base model, automatic, 105,000 km, purchased brand new and maintained according to the maintenance schedule. We had a snowy day here. This afternoon, the car was running normally, parked, and then when we came back it started and ran normally but the transmission would not engage in forward, reverse, or any gear. When the shift lever was pushed back into "park" there was a delightful grinding noise. The flat bed tow truck was summoned and the tow truck driver told us the car was in neutral, no matter where the shift lever happened to be placed -- the car rolled easily once the handbrake was released?

Any simple explanation of this? Usual Volvo mega-repair bill involved?

Broken Axle is the most likely cause.
