Default 2016 T6 XC90 Limp Mode P0017, P0303, P0011, P023D

Hello All,

First off, thank you very much for your time and assistance! I own a 2016 XC90 T6 with 90K miles. Second owner. I'm in San Diego, CA. I have a decent scanner bought off Amazon but not Dice/Vida that i'm reading that I may need.

The car recently went into a limp mode and can't get over 30ish mph. I checked my DTC's and it gave me the following:
-P0017 - Crankshaft Position, Camshaft Position, Correlation - Bank 1 Sensor B
-P0303 Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected
-P0011 Intake Camshaft Position Timing - Over-Advanced (Bank 1)
-P023D MAP - Turbocharger/Supercharger Boost Sensor "a" correlation

-My initial attempt at fixing this was to investigate cylinder 3. Stock plugs. At least I haven't changed them since I purchased w/ 30K miles. I ruled out the coil packs. Pulled and changed all plugs with bosch iridium 8505 plugs. #3 was completely fouled...so much so that there was zero gap. All other plugs were clean. Installed the 4 new plugs. No change. P0303 code erased and has not come back.
-intermittent rattle noise (sounds metal on metal maybe?) im not sure where it's coming from.
-I removed the plastic liner under the motor under the car and noticed a good oil buildup on the liner under the passenger side. I'm reading the crankshaft seal is a very common problem on these. I haven't removed the timing cover yet or got eyes on the oil leak. That's my plan tomorrow.
-I scoped all 4 cylinders with a camera and they all seem to be fine. I did notice after a few short test drives, #3's new plug had slight build up and more than the rest?
-wife runs 87 in this car consistently

What do you all recommend I look for? Do I buy VIDA? If so, what hardware do I need? Is the correct version of VIDA for me direct thru Volvo and pay for the three day subscription? Are there other options? Are there sensors that you'd replace?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

James

sometimes rattles can actually be misfires... but that may also be mechanical. Did you also test for positive crank case pressure? a failed PCV oil separator can push oil out through the seals and mess with the VVT - which will cause the P0017. Have you noticed any coolant or oil consumption or hard coolant hoses to suggest a head gasket issue? with the timing cover off, inspect both the cam and crank seals on the front (I'd also look at the rear cam seals for any weeping there).

Oil consumption became my issue in my xc90 6t. Went in to get service over "low oil" light coming on right after it was changed . My Volvo Service Center had no problem doing the consumption test. & The out come was that my engine was consuming 6.8 letters of oil per every 6,214 miles . With TJ-34740 and extended warranty P10186 they were able to fix my problem for free. Although, the damage from excessive oil going through the engine has damaged connected parts and now my car has the same issues as you listed above. I am continuously at the service center with camshaft, 02 sencers, supercharger crankshaft codes along with smoke test for leaks. My check engine light is a normal dash light now. Good luck and look into the "oil consumption" it's a big problem with our cars. Google it, maybe it can help get you some answers.
