Default 2016 XC90 Aircon Issues

Hi all

I have a 2016 XC90 petrol that constantly has aircon issues. Every time the system gets regassed it goes well for about 2 weeks then the passenger side starts to not blow as cold air as the driver side then eventually both stop blowing cold air. When it’s a hot day, the system hardly works.
I have had the rear condenser, front condenser AND compressor changed however we continue to have issues. Has anyone come across these issues after changing all these parts??
thank you in advance

Alright, let’s talk about something that drives me nuts—when your AC stops working on a hot day. If you own a 2016 Volvo XC90, you might have already dealt with this. I’ve seen a lot of XC90 owners complain about weak cooling, random airflow issues, or the AC just deciding to take a vacation when you need it the most.

If this sounds familiar, don’t worry. I’ve been around enough Volvos to know what’s going on. Let’s figure out why your AC isn’t doing its job and how to fix it.

Why Your XC90’s AC Might Be Acting Up

First things first—if your air conditioning is blowing warm air or just not cooling like it used to, low refrigerant is often the culprit. Volvo’s AC systems are pretty solid, but they’re not immune to leaks. If your refrigerant is low, you might have a small leak somewhere. A quick pressure test at a shop can confirm this, and a recharge should get you back to cool air.

If your AC is working sometimes and then stops randomly, you might be dealing with a failing compressor or a bad temperature sensor. This is super frustrating because one minute it’s fine, and the next, you’re sweating in traffic. The compressor is like the heart of your AC system—if it’s weak or failing, the whole system struggles.

Another common issue? Blower motor problems. If the airflow feels weak, even when you crank up the fan, your blower motor or resistor might need replacing. I had a friend with an XC90 who thought his AC was dead, but it turned out to be a clogged cabin air filter. Super cheap fix—just swap it out, and you’re good.

How to Fix It (Without Losing Your Mind)

Check your refrigerant levels – If the AC is weak or blowing warm air, this is your first move. A mechanic can check for leaks and recharge it.

Replace the cabin air filter – It’s easy to forget, but a clogged filter can seriously mess with your airflow. Swap it out every 12,000–15,000 miles.

Listen for weird noises – If you hear clicking or whining when the AC is on, your compressor or AC clutch might be struggling. Get it checked before it completely dies.

Run your AC in winter – I know, sounds weird, right? But running your AC occasionally in the colder months keeps the system lubricated and prevents issues down the road.

Final Thoughts

Look, Volvos are amazing cars, but even the best rides have their quirks. If your 2016 XC90’s AC is acting up, don’t panic. Start with the easy fixes, and if the problem sticks around, take it to a Volvo specialist. Trust me, sweating in traffic is no fun, and fixing your AC is totally worth it.

Got any XC90 AC horror stories? Let me know—I’d love to hear them!
