Hello from Boston
Hi,
My wife just bought an 96 Volvo 850. I've been driving her to and from work for the past 2 years and now she finally has a car of her own. It's so nice, I wish it were mine! Been driving a 2000 Fix Or Repair Daily Escort ZX2 since 2008. Wow! What a difference driving the Volvo! No shifting, the seats are SO comfortable, it's a 4-door, and there's so much MORE ROOM inside.
Lot of little things to fix on the Volvo -- just replaced the visor, the shift console light is out, the odometer isn't working, the headlight wipers don't work, and the sound system sucks - ( sc710). Been finding a LOT of useful information on here and would like to thank everyone for sharing their knowledge.
That's it. Now to search for what type of bulb to use when replacing the shifter light....

I found a better way to deal with the shift console light replacement. First I tried buying some bulbs from Radio Shack and soldering them into the old bulb unit. Ended up melting the unit. So I cut the wires and spliced in a bayonet mount bulb fixture that uses BA9s bulbs and "borrowed" the bulb from one of the 2 lights above the rear view mirror. I plan on replacing the console "glove box" light and cigarette lighter with these as well, but with LED bulbs.
Lately I've noticed that only the footwell lights come on when the door is open. Shouldn't the other lights come on as well? They do when the switch is to the left, but when it's to the right, they don't. What would cause this? Is there a switch on the door? (Couldn't find one.) Or is it the light switch over the rear view mirror? Before my wife bought the car, the lights did work, but then flickered and went out (when the door was open.) One person said it was fuse #47 but that wasn't for an 850. Any ideas? I'll try the fuse tomorrow, but if that doesn't work I'm out of ideas.
Oh, one more thing -- shouldn't the trunk light come on when you open the trunk? It looks like you have to turn it on manually.
