I have a 1990 240 sedan, my mother gave it to me in 2001, just a month before she died -so this car means a lot to me.

I am very disappointed with the last few repairs I've had done here in town. I am new in town and still trying to find who's who. The heater wouldn't turn off, so my mecahanic put a switch under the hood! I'm supposed to use the switch when I want heat -now that's really inconvenient! I also lost the plastic pan under the engine -it was pulled off when I got stuck in some sand at the beach. My mechanic said that it wasn't necessary and wouldn't replace it! But I've seen online it is necessary and is rather inexpensive.

I've decided to take charge and work on the darn car myself. Other than sentimental reasons, I really love this car! It's as dependable as it gets. The problems I have seem to be more quirky than anything.

Anyway, just thought I'd say "Hi" as I suspect you will hear lots more from me! :-)

I've never owned a 240, but I hear they are one of the most reliable and easiest to work on of most any car on the road. You came to right place for advice. Welcome and good luck with the car. How many miles are on it?

 

139K but the speedometer broke so the numbers on th eodometer are off center and move very slowly, when they do move! My mechanic said that it would be too complicated to fix... this is a small town, I think they prefer new cars or just oil changes :-)

 

A gear can be bought from online and installed easy.

 

yeah, i would find a different mechanic - that one sounds lazy, unprofessional, unknowledgable, and maybe even a scam artist

 

Well, as luck would have it, I met a woman in the supermarket parking lot who was driving a Volvo! I think we have the only two in town! She told me of a really good mechanic -one who has about 20 parts Volvos behind his shop! I told her about this group and she was thrilled -she bought the car for her daughter but fell in love with it and is keeping it for herself. LOL

Thank you for all the offers of help, it's given me much needed confidence. I am starting with a order for trim and a new plastic thing for under the engine. I think I'll have the new mechanic fix my speedometer. I want to get a 200K pin -but will never get there without fixing the odemeter!
