I recently purchased an 1985 volvo 740 wagon 4cyl (non turbo)with a rod knocking. I purchased a motor from the salvage yard and replaced it, however now I am having troubles trying to start the car. When I go out to start the car it turns over real hard for about 2 turns and then it will turn over easy and start. Once the car is started and running if I turn the car off and then try to resart it you have to hold the gas to the floor or pump it like crazy to get it started. Once started again it will blow black smoke for a couple seconds as it is flooded then it clears up and runs great until you have to restart it again. The only thing I am unsure about is the timing and the injector harness. How do I set the timing and How do I know which injector wire goes to which injector? Please help with my new project.

PS I already tried jumping the fuel pump relay during starting and it does not help the hard start condition.

Thanks JAmes

I don't think holding your foot down or pumping the gas does anything - computer contolled fuel injection, remember? Could be a variety of things. AM(air mass sensor), rpm sensor....

Timing is controlled by the ECU (computer). If your used to working on old Pontiacs you need to come up to speed with the 'new' technology your Volvo uses. Its a different beast.
