Mechanic/Technician buys first Volvo - '93
Hi Folks,
My daily driver for the last three years has been a '91 F150 that I modified with a Lincoln 460 and a Camaro 6-speed. It is built for towing a 6200 lb generator and gets 10 mpg. So, a customer had this '93 940 for sale that I had tuned up for him a few months earlier. He started out at $2200 and came to me for a belt tightening when he was down to $1800. I tightened the belt for free, the third time, and told him if he didn't sell it I would give him $1500. He came back and I bought it.
There was lots of stuff wrong and I have spent about $700 in parts fixing most everything. I wanted to thank the contributors on this site because doing searches and reading old threads helped me solve a couple problems way faster than trying to use Alldata to troubleshoot. I still have a couple problems but I will post those in the 940 forum.
This 940 is a non-turbo, I think a Canadian model because the distributor is on the drivers side of the block and not on the back of the cam like all the pictures I have show. Anyway, it is the slowest car off the line that I have ever owned, and I love it. It runs great, sounds great, and gets almost triple the gas mileage of my truck. It is real slow off the line but has plenty of guts for passing when at highway speeds (55 here). Oh yes, I removed both stock mufflers and had a pipe bent to install a flowmaster in their place. It sounds kind of like a tuner Honda except deeper and throatier. It is hilarious to see people on the street rubberneck when they hear me pass but then imediately look away when they realize it's an old Volvo. Almost like they are embarased that they were looking.
Oh yes, I am a ASE Master Tech and own my own shop on the Big Island of Hawaii. I don't always have time to spend on the site but I do appreciate those who contribute.
