New Member- 1987 240 DL wagon owner
Hello All!
I am glad that I found this forum and hope that it proves helpful. I just purchased a nice little '87 240 DL Wagon. I am a little stressed out after only having it a week and it started stalling on me. At first it was nothing too traumatic, just stalled at red light, but started right away. I also started it one morning before work to let it warm up as I had been doing and it ran for a few minutes but quit. Today however after driving it quite a distance to run errands it started sputtering while driving and when pressing the accelerator it didn't want to go. I made it to a gas station, barely as it quit completely. I also noticed as I was turning the steering seemed very tight.
I let it sit for a few minutes and then tried starting it, nothing. A friend came and we looked under hood and discussed what could be the problem. After 15 minutes or so, the car started right up. I had less than a mile to drive to my house. Once on the road it tried stalling again, but I made it.
I have read that the problem lies in the Fuel Pump Relay, should I start there or with fuses??
Hopefully I can love this car without being scared to drive it!

Welcome to the forum, AnnieO. Yes the fuel pump relay is a good place to start. I t is located under the front passenger's seat carpet. When replacing it, be sure that the wires on the connection are not rubbed through from years of contact with the firewall. Re insulate with electrical tape if that is the case.
Also, please note that farther down on the Index page here at the forum is a section devoted to just the 240/740/940 cars. You will get a much faster response there because that's where all us 240 fans hang out. Also, spend a few hours searching the archives in that section; you will see a lot of information regarding common issues that come up with these older cars that you may not have realized yet.
