New memeber from Evanston, illinois
My wife and I own a V70 1999. We have been generally happy with the vehicle up to this point. A couple weeks ago the ets light began to come on intermittenly and we smelled a phosphorus smell (like rotten eggs). The owners manual suggests restarting the vehicle same as rebooting the system I guess. On sunday, the vehicle has had an uneven idle, bucks like a horse, the ETS lights blares at you and now the Check engine light comes on. The dealer wants to replace the ETS throttle body and install software at a price of only $1000--sarcasm. I have researched this situation and find that AllData Service has service bulletins and recalls on this particular problem. Our car barely has 47000 and is serviced religiously.
any insights? Maybe Volvo corporate should be paying for these faulty problems.

That is too bad. Unfortunately if they have not made a recall they consider it wear and tear. I read in another post where someone stated that autos were a poor investment....I guess he is right.
Try cleaning the throttle body really good and that might help you for a while. There IS NO RECALL on the throttle body's.There was a bulletin for cleaning the throttle body but thats about it.
Be careful not to let it go to long or it will fail all together and leave you stranded.

I totally agree with cleaning it right away. I had my last vehicles replaced but the dealership did it for free. They called it a hardship repair order... I told them I didn't have the money for this...
Autos are an expense not an investment, unless you are buying antique vehicles and restoring them. The ones we drive on a daily basis are definitely an expense. Anyone calling them an investment is mistaken.
