Hi,
I'm kind of late to join as I've just realised I can actually try and fix things myself with the help of the Volvo community. Late because my Volvo V70 (year 2000) is currently on sell I just wanted to it be better for the next driver.
So yesterday I finally had time to try to replace my radio that had CD-error - making strange noises on every start even if radio is on, turning randomly from radio to cd etc.
The new radio works perfectly with radio or CD! Only thing that seems to be an issue is that I think it has poorer signal. It's not bad but enough to notice.
The radio seemed to have some oxidation on the case. Now that I've checked more closoley, I do see some also on the green and gray socket pins. The antenna pins are so small that I'm not sure if there is any.
So I guess first try would be to clean all of them but how?
I also learned that there are secret menus on the radio that can change radio signal but that's for range, not increasing the signal, right?
Could there be any other reasons? I did notice the screen had few second delay before it went on like it was charging or something.
You can use a brass wire brush to carefully clean them without bending them. Also CRC (brand) Contact cleaner works great and is made for electronics. Use that to spray all up in those connectors. It is a fast evaporating cleaner intended to be used even on circuit boards, it will not damage any electronics.
EDIT: sometimes a bad radio signal is just because the radio is old and worn out
As I didn't have those tools at home, I thought I'd try mixing 2 radios together and it seemed to have worked. The antenna pins seemed cleaned so I think you were right - it's just old radio. Anyways, the problematic part was that CD reader had error and made mechanical noises even if it was not on. Like it was trying to load or read something. So I replaced only the CD player in the radio. Radio signal is good, CD works!
