When it comes to spending money on getting your car fixed. You must decided first. Is this the car I really want and to hang on too?

Owing a Volvo is not for the faint of heart. It will cost you least 1k a year to maintan and keep it in top running condition.

thanks for your 2cents but as i said it is NOT mine (nor do i want it), i am helping someone that doesn't really have the mechanical backround that may be needed to find all the options. and yes i know about certain european cars and the ability to cost more and have fewer avenues of resources....and from what i know owning any car in the technological age is not for the home mechanic.

There was a computer fix for some of the transmission problems in these MY's. That would be my first option. People have done the swap. $$$'s depends on whether you can get used or new transmission and labor costs.

so your'e sayin there is a chance...is there a good database for which cars have a manual tranny that would match up(vin or certain MY). and as far as the software goes, is it only a one time fix or something that can/will have to be done multiple times in the future? thanks

Computer fix is a one time thing. I know the AT to Man switch was easier on the older cars. It could be done on the newer as long as it's the same engine. You've about exhausted my knowledge about switching transmissions at this point.
