Default Radio Problems

I have a 98 S70 with the cassette stereo radio. Yesterday there was a loud crackling sound and the sound went off. After a few minutes of radio off, when started again the radio played for a while then the same thing. I notice that the right side speakers do not play when sound shifted to one side (crackling noise excepted - it seems to come from both sides). Question: is this more likely to be a radio problem or a speaker problem or a wiring problem. What is the best way to procede?

Well, if the radio actually turned itself off, then it's the radio or the power feeding the radio. Check the fuse contacts first, and clean any corrosion. Next, Check for loose or broken wires. The best way to do this is disconnect the power at the radio, and use a voltmeter. Wiggle the cables and see if the voltage fluctuates, or drops in and out.

To verify the speakers, substitute. You can use almost any speaker. Just remove the wires from the exsisting speakers and connect to a "test" speaker.

Unfortunately, I suspect it is the head unit, or radio itself.
