Default transmission swapping a 240

me and my buddy are planning on getting a 1989 volvo 240 as a project car, and we are planning on manual swapping it. all i’m wondering is how do i know what kind of transmissions can fit in the 240. do different ones have different bolt patterns? are most euro transmissions the same or so i need to buy one that was made for the volvo 240? thank you.

The easiest would be to use a manual transmission from a volvo. No other bell housing is going to bolt up to the engine without an adapter. Volvo named their manuals for the red block cars the M45, M46 and M47.

The 45 is a 4 speed, 46 is that 4 speed case with a laycock electric overdrive added on, and the 47 is an aluminum case pure 5 speed. The overdrives wear out and can be expensive to fix - so if you can find a M47 that would be the best choice IMHO.
