Default Volvo v40 starting/ running issues

Hi everyone!! Right so my work colleague has a 1999 Volvo v40 petrol auto. If you turn the key to start the car you have to keep the key turned for about 15 seconds and it will sort of fire and die. On the the fifth attemp it will eventually fire and run rough for about 10 seconds and then even out. If you accelerate then engine will hover around 3k and not drop. Also it stinks of fuel out the back with a cloud of smoke sort of white / grey. I have and obd2 computer but it won’t talk to the car so I assume it has the older diagnostic set up. Can anyone shed any light on this at all please?
many thanks, Simon

Fuel pressure regulators are a common failure on that engine. pull the vacuum line off it and check for gas coming out of that line (there should not be)

+1. FPR attaches to the right side of the fuel rail and held on by two bolts - easy replace. Sorry to say, part is not cheap so don't be shocked if you get a quote for $200 US. Car may also run rich causing a CEL (misfire)
