Default How much boost is the v40 running

Trying to get an idea of how much boost the wifes 2001 V40 is producing? And can if I were to drop in a manual boost controller how much can I up it and stay SAFE. Sorry I'm a newby here so I'm trying to learn as much as possible. Doesn't seem to be much of an aftermarket out there.

I think it runs between 5-7 psi.

I have seen people adjust the waste gate and get a little more boost out of it.
Some say you can't because it is controlled by a boost valve but I have seen it done hundreds of times.

You can get the ECU upgraded as well.

great. So anything over 10 I'm guessing would be to much stress on stock internals. You mentioned there are ECU upgrades out there. Can you give me a few names?

I was told that my S40 would run 7 psi max with current program. I had my chip done and boost is supose to be 16. I am told that this is the max for the stock turbo.

So 16psi is safe of stock internals huh? How about the auot tranny? Can it handle this much boost for daily driving?

For me I have 02 Mazda Protege 5 with a Garrett GT28RS turbo. Running anything over 10psi on stock internals equals ZOOM ZOOM BOOM!! I am running 8-9psi now and putting about 200 hp to the wheels.

Last question: What turbo is in the v40? Reason i ask is we have not taken delivery yet. Should have the papers finalized tonight.

I wouldn't run more then 15 PSI max on your Volvo. I was running 5-7PSI and I am running 12 PSI now safely.

The only reason i say don't run more then 15 is because the stock turbo's efficency range is maxed out at around 12-15 PSI. Any higher and it wont do as well.

how do adjust the waste gate to get more boost tech
First you would need an aftermarket guage.
Then you unhook the waste gate and turn it in one turn and try driving it.
Usually 1.5 turns is how much people go.

Alot of people out there do it all the time.
That is your opinion not to mess with it.
I leave it up to the person working on their own car.
On the older cars when you install a MBC you adjust the waste gate when installing the MBC it makes the boost smoother and longer through the power band.

It isn't just my opinion TECH. In most people opinion you shouldn't touch the wastegate. It is a dangerous thing to do. Especially if your not willing to purchase a boost gauge and especially if you don't know what your doing even if you have a boost gauge. And I know a lot of people do mess with it too, but they shouldn't.

In general you shouldn't touch it.

It isn't as dangerous as most people think.
But I will still give the info and if people take it wrong or won't listen to how I give it then they learn the hard way.
I would rather have the proper info out there than give the WRONG info.

woah woah! stop right there. the 12t on the s/v40's stock should not be pushed passed 12 psi, especially without an ecu tune. And if you are keeping the 12t and you get an ecu tune, you still should consider an exhaust upgrade. Running above 14-15 psi on a 12t with or without an ecu tune is dangerous. If you go to s40 concepts any of the guys will tell you that your pushing your engine with that kind of boost and only an ecu tune. All the ecu tune will do for upping the boost will adjust itself to accept the increase in air to fuel so that your air to fuel ratio doesnt go whacky. If you are serious about getting more power out of your 40 series than you should seriously consider upgrading your turbo to a direct bolt on 14t and an upgraded exhaust. Then have your ecu tuned. But I warn you, 16 psi on a stock 12t will haunt you down the road.

I'm really late here but I'm just wondering if you get a electronic control boost, will you still have to change up the ecu ? I want to put that 14t, but I can't find a place to tune up my ecu, for the V40

Just upgrade to a TD04L 14T and run stock boost. Very easy to do.

There is a tuner in NC that will tune your ecu with Upsolute

Default Small vacuum leak=big boost

I have a small vacuum leak somwhere, still can’t find it but it’s making my turbo hit 13-15 lbs at 4500rpms and it’s been like that for 2,000 miles and all I get is a lean code
