Hello,
I have a early 1997 960 Sedan 2.9. Mechanic says it's the last year they made the good motor. Anyone know anything about this? This is my first Volvo.

Pretty much the last of the RWD Volvo's. I really don't know anything about the car though.

 

This is a FWD. When did Volvo sell out?

If it is a 960 then it is a RWD.

If it is FWD it is not a 960. Also mid 1997 they made a S90 and carried that over to 98 and that was the last year but it was still a RWD car.

 

That is why I am confused??

If you look under the rear of the car, you should see the rear axle.
You engine should look like this:

 

No Way Jose. If it's a 960 it's rear wheel drive.

 

Wonder if he has a 850 and maybe if it had paintwork or wrecked, they put the wrong lable on the back. I have seen that happen before!

 

My mistake. It is a RWD. 1997 960. I went to the garage and looked. Yes that is the same motor in the picture as the one under my hood. Is that the good one? That one is cleaner. Any recommendations n cleaning up this motor?

The car in the picture must never be drive or leave the garage (not my car).
The motor is fine, just keep up on regular oilchanges and maintenance/ tune ups and you will be fine.
You can get engine degreaser/cleaner (we use gunk)and a hose to clean it. It dose get very messy and your drive will hate you for a few seconds
You will want to take some time andcover things that could allow water to get in the motor.

 

Also run premium gas in it.
Yes they are pretty good have seen many with 300k on them.

 

Seems to be running fine on regular gas. I've heard that the computer will adjust for this. I have also heard many different opinions on this. What will happen if I keep using regular gas?

Chance of burning a valve.
Since prices went way up and alot of people were using regular they started burning valves.

 

Don't want that to happen.
