MOT Test Question: Can I Pass with Minor Rust on My Car?
Hello everyone.
I have a quick question about the MOT test. My car has some minor rust on the undercarriage and a few body panels. It's not affecting the structural integrity of the vehicle, and there are no holes or anything that could be considered dangerous.
However, I’m concerned about whether this could cause me to fail the MOT test. I’ve read that rust isn’t necessarily an automatic fail unless it’s severe or compromises the car’s safety, but I’d love to hear from anyone who has had a similar experience.
Should I be worried, or is this something that can be passed with a warning?

I think that question is best answered by the MOT folks (I suspect they have a web site with failure criteria). Here in the US, the regulations for rust vary by state. I happen to live in Vermont - lots of salted roads and very strict rust regulations that are often interpreted differently by each shop (no centralized state run inspections). In Vermont body panel rust can get a pass but corrosion on metal brake lines and other safety related parts, rusted jack points, rust by the A, B or C pillars are certain to get flagged.
